Chapter Nine

Sometimes, the traditional reputation of an herb just doesn’t hold up to modern scrutiny. In China, Ginkgo biloba is called the “fountain of youth” and is believed to have powerful anti-aging properties. It’s likely that people formed that idea by association, knowing that ginkgo trees live, literally, for thousands of years. The reasoning goes something like, If the tree can live that long, just think what it will do for us!

But the longevity of the trees doesn’t appear to translate to humans. Scientists have learned that ginkgo trees live as long as they do because they produce protective chemicals that fend off disease and because they lack the genetic programming that determines short-span lives for plants and mammals. But multiple studies have failed to find any conclusive evidence that consuming parts of the tree will increase the lives of humans and keep us functioning, mentally, longer.
